{ Thoughts on Teaching}

Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it. ~Andre Gide

Thoughts

Just a reminder that this is my personal website. I don't promise to always keep it up to date. I don't promise to always be politically correct. The purpose is to give those that wander through something to think about, to ponder. I hope you enjoy your taste of my little world here in the World Wide Web.

Reading for the Future

Here is a site that promotes using Science Fiction and Fantasy in the classroom.

"Modern cynics and skeptics... see no harm in paying those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to those to whom they entrust the care of their plumbing."  ~John F. Kennedy

First I should clarify; I am not a school teacher. I have conducted many training classes. Written training on various topics and taught workshops, also on a variety of topics. I am a parent and grandparent, which in itself should qualify me to have an opinion about what is lacking in todays classroom.

In today’s classroom what is often lacking due to resources and time constraints are lessons that inspire the students. These students are our next generation of innovative thinkers and we must take steps to excite them and sharpen their critical thinking skills. Because Science Fiction and Fantasy covers many different topics from social issues like banning books and the misuse of technology to complex math and physics it is an ideal tool for using in the classroom as an introduction to complicated ideas and forward thinking.

Science Fiction can give students an imaginative glimpse into the potential futures that they can help to create. The genre can help the student to explore alternate models of society and history as well as political issues some of which affect our society today. Science Fiction is known as the “Literature of Change” and it literally broadens a students horizons. I believe that Science Fiction and Fantasy are the Literatures of Possibilities. Endless and exhaustive potential futures open for exploration. It is said that Space is the next frontier but exploring the possibilities in all realms is a frontier that will never be fully explored or exhausted.
